When told of their impending arrival, he said he had time to finish his game of bowls and time to defeat the Armada too.

The Pilgrim Fathers sailed from Plymouth on 6th September 1620 to found New England. The Mayflower Steps mark the spot of this illustrious voyage’s departure.

The largest city in Devon, Plymouth is home to the Royal Naval Dockyard. Brittany Ferries regularly sail to France and Spain. There are numerous marinas, water sports and dive sites.

Shopaholics will love the recently opened Drake Circus Shopping Mall.

Explore the cobbled streets and discover antique markets, the Elizabethan Gardens and Elizabethan House. The newly extended National Marine Aquarium on The Barbican is the largest in Britain and has the deepest tank in Europe. Across the water visit the Barbican Leisure Park packed with bowling, restaurants and more.

Plymouth Pavilions and Theatre Royal boast regular shows of excellent calibre and many shows have premiered here before going of the West End of London. Elton John and George Michael are just two of the stars who have recently entertained thousands of people with stadium concerts at Plymouth Argyle Football Ground.

The city is an ideal base from which to visit Cornwall, with the world famous Eden Project just a one hour’s drive away, and Dartmoor, a beautiful, wild and rugged National Park.
